AIDA Development creates the Movable Aircraft Passenger Seat

Travelling overseas in economy class is not always a pleasure. For airlines, not only time is money, but space too. Narrow seats and small seat pitches are the uncomfortable result of high cabin capacities.

However, in fact, there is plenty of space in the cabin. Statistics show: 25 % of all available passenger seats remain unoccupied! This has led AIDA Development to the idea the Movable Aircraft Passenger Seat (MAPS), a concept designed to utilize this remaining space to achieve higher comfort and create a new source of revenue for airline carriers.

An electrically driven actuation system slides individual passenger seat rows, adjusting them at variable pitches from standard 32 inch (BASIC mode) to comfortable 36 inch (COMFORT mode). Hence uncountable cabin layout options are possible. Premium charge for COMFORT seat mode will bolster the carrier´s revenue - especially at lower cabin loads.

Variable pitch adjustment is also made possible by movable overhead Passenger Service Units or, alternatively, by integrating systems such as air conditioning, oxygen, lights and communication into the seat structure itself.

A variable cabin layout requires an intelligent cabin management system. Based on the available booking information, the system computes the optimal cabin configuration for a particular flight and, shortly before boarding, slides the relevant seat rows into their designated position. Once boarding is complete, the cabin management system also helps monitoring several functions, such as safety belts closed, back rest upright, etc,. hence minimizing aircraft turnaround time at the gate.

“A lot of details still need to be worked out. But we are sure this concept will soon get a great deal of attention from a lot of airlines as well as travelers”, says Peter Miehlke, COO of AIDA Development GmbH.
